In Falsus Mouse and Keyboard Controls
Floor lanes in one hand, aerial Field in the other — and why MIN exists.
The control scheme is the number one reason people close the In Falsus demo. Official copy calls it a signature mouse-and-keyboard system: incoming Floor notes plus a sweeping aerial Field. Community comments call it “six keys on five fingers.” Both descriptions are true depending on difficulty.
This page is the practical bind guide. Pair it with the keybind planner if you need layouts, and with scoring once EXACT popups make sense.
The playfield, named
The chart is 3D and scrolls toward you. The lower board is the Floor: six vertical lanes. The upper board is the Field: a higher judgement line driven by mouse motion, not extra keys.
Floor note types you will meet in the demo:
- Taps that want a key at the line.
- Holds that want the key kept down along a trail.
- Side-lane notes that only appear when the chart uses the outer two Floor keys.
Field note types:
- Field hits that want the cursor on the aerial line at the beat.
- Flicks: yellow wants a leftward mouse sweep, green wants a rightward sweep. You must overlap the note’s horizontal length; you do not have to paint the entire bar in one cinematic stroke.
Gameplay screenshots of Hyaloüyne label the Floor keys on the judgement line itself: Shift on the far left, then A, S, F, Space on the right. The sixth lane is D. If a frame shows a dark empty lane, that chart simply did not use D in that measure.
Default keyboard layout
lowiro’s documented default for the six Floor lanes is:
| Lane | Default key |
|---|---|
| Outer left | Left Shift |
| Inner 1 | A |
| Inner 2 | S |
| Inner 3 | D |
| Inner 4 | F |
| Outer right | Space |
MINIMAL, labelled MIN on the song wheel, does not ask for all six. MIN charts use four keys and allow a static finger rest. Community documentation (and the Flipped Gameplay setting) describes MIN as middle lanes plus one side lane, with the opposite side unused. That is why MIN is the correct first difficulty even for Arcaea veterans: it teaches timing without a stretch pinky.
EVO, ULT, and FBD add density and bring the unused Floor lanes plus a busier Field. FBD is locked on the demo song wheel until the game says otherwise. Do not hunt a secret key combo to force it.
Mouse hand rules
Keep the mouse on a large pad. Field motion is horizontal and sometimes fast. A tiny travel area makes flicks feel like misreads. You do not click Floor notes with the mouse; clicks are not a substitute for A/S/D/F.
If you are left-handed, swap: put keys under the right hand and mouse under the left, then use the in-game remap plus Flipped Gameplay if the side lanes feel mirrored wrong. The setting exists because the studio already expected this.
Remapping without creating a worse problem
Yes, you can change keys. Demo players who survive ULT usually do. The mistake is remapping before MIN feels comfortable.
Sane first remaps:
- Move Left Shift to a closer key (Caps Lock, Q, or a thumb button) if the stretch hurts.
- Keep A/S/D/F as a home block if you already type; the bumps on F still help.
- Do not bind Floor notes to mouse buttons unless you have a controller-cap plan. The Field already owns the mouse.
Wild remaps people mention in comments (drawing tablet + stylus buttons, split 3+3 across both hands with thumb on a trackpad) are experiments, not official layouts. Try them after you can EXACT a MIN 2. Log whatever you settle on in the keybind planner.
Reading the HUD while you play
Top-left is the big performance score. Nearby you may see Encounter Score with stars — that number is the story-fight layer, not a second accuracy grade. Jacket and song title sit top-right (Hyaloüyne / ak+q in the common screenshot). Card art stacks on the left when a loadout is equipped. Lane labels at the judgement line are training wheels; they vanish from your attention once muscle memory exists.
If the Field is what kills you, isolate it: pick a MIN chart with sparse aerial notes, watch the official gameplay showcase in the middle of this page, then replay. If Floor chords kill you, you jumped difficulty. Check MIN EVO ULT FBD before you buy a new keyboard.
Practice order that actually works
- MIN chart, default keys, ignore score.
- Same chart, watch only the Field for one pass.
- Same chart, watch only Floor.
- Then EVO on that song, not ULT on a boss jacket.
The getting started page puts this in a full session plan. The demo walkthrough tells you which jackets are even in the build. Controls are the bottleneck; everything else waits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for demo players and launch-week questions.
Do I need six fingers on one hand?
Not on MIN. MIN is a four-key subset. Six-key Floor plus Field is the later difficulties. See difficulties.
Can I play with a controller or on Steam Deck?
Steam lists the game as Playable on Deck, not Native. The design is mouse plus keyboard. Read system requirements.
What do yellow and green Field notes mean?
Flicks. Yellow is left, green is right. Overlap the note's width; you do not have to paint the whole bar.
Where is D if the screenshot only shows A S F?
D is the unused inner lane in that measure. The full default row is Shift, A, S, D, F, Space.
